Carl D. Perkins Grant Guidelines
For the vocational/technical major who can document financial need, limited financial support may be available for child care, books, or transportation.  Application deadlines apply.

Deadlines
Spring 2006: November 15, 2005 -
Application available October 3, 2005
Fall 2005: July 14, 2006 -
Application available April 3, 2006

Applications must be picked up in the Support Services office.  To be considered for funding, students must meet all guidelines and have submitted all necessary documentation, including filing a FASFA application on-line or through the TJC Financial Aid office.  Financial assistance eligibility is based upon major, need, full-time status, and availability of Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Grant funds.

Grant funds are limited, so eligible students will be placed on a waiting list and awarded funds according to highest economic need.  All students must reapply prior to the fall semester of each academic year.

All Perkins participants must be full-time students majoring in a two-year Vocational /Technology or Health Science Program as listed in the Tyler Junior College course catalog.  Awards are based on the amount of Carl D. Perkins funding available each semester.

Your current major must be listed correctly in the Registrar's office. If it is not, you must change it immediately. (ex: If your major is nursing, but you have not yet been accepted into the program, your major should state 8021p-Pre-nursing).  Associate of Arts (transfer degree) majors, such as General Studies or Interdisciplinary Studies, are not eligible.

Apply for the Federal Pell Grant on-line or in the financial aid office.

Demonstrate an economic need.

Turn in a notarized Perkins Grant application, with all required documentation, by the deadline.

Sign contracts prior to funds being awarded.

Maintain a 2.0 GPA and maintain full-time (12 hour) status without excessive absences. Progress should be evident toward a major to qualify for future funding.

Dependent Care:
Dependant Care is limited to three dependents per family. It is paid directly to the designated licensed daycare facility or registered family home at a weekly rate based on the age of the child(ren). Childcare funding from others sources such as CCMS must be reported. Childcare funding cannot be awarded from two sources. Excessive absences of child from daycare will result in cancellation of funds. Payment is made at the beginning of each month. The rates are as follows and are subject to change.

Infants to age 1----------------------------$55.00

Ages 1 to 2---------------------------------$50.00

Ages 2 and up -----------------------------$40.00

After school care--------------------------$20.00

Transportation Reimbursement:
is available to those Perkins participants who live 20 or more miles from campus. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.10 per mile. Mileage log sheets must be picked up at the beginning of the month, filled in, and returned to Support Services at the end of the month. Logs later than the 5th day of the next month will delay payment for transportation. Checks are available in Business Services by the 15th of the month for the previous month. Please record exact one-way trip mileage.

Book Loans:
are available to Perkins participants who are unable to cover the cost of books with a Pell Grant or other means. Books must be returned to the SUPPORT SERVICES office at the end of each semester. Failure to do so will result in a "hold" being placed on records. This will prevent future enrollment and/or release of transcripts. Also, books can only be vouchered from the on-campus bookstore.

Books needed for medical programs, such as nursing, dental hygiene, etc., cannot be loaned under this program.
